MEMBERSHIP CODE OF CONDUCT

The Etobicoke Swim Club is committed to excellence, fair play and pride. To that end, athletes, parents/legal guardians and member families, coaches and chaperones are expected to abide by the following Code of Conduct. This Code is to be adhered to at all times while the swimmer is training, travelling or competing with or for the Club.

ESWIM Athletes will:

1. Maintain and enhance the dignity and self-esteem of ESWIM and other individuals by:

  1. a)  demonstrating respect to individuals regardless of body type, physical characteristics, athletic ability, gender, ancestry, colour, ethnic or racial origin, nationality, national origin, sexual orientation, age, marital status, religion, religious belief, political belief, disability or economic status

  2. b)  avoiding public criticism of athletes, coaches, officials, organizers, volunteers, employees and members

  3. c)  consistently demonstrating the spirit of sportsmanship, sports leadership and ethical conduct

  4. d)  consistently treating individuals fairly and reasonably

  5. e)  ensuring that the rules of swimming, and the spirit of such rules, are adhered to

  6. f)  communicate with coaches only through their parents email on file at club if athlete is a minor

2. Refrain from any behaviour that constitutes harassment, where harassment is defined as comment or conduct directed towards an individual or group, which is offensive, abusive, racist, sexist, degrading or malicious. This includes but is not limited to:

  1. a)  written or verbal abuse, threats or outbursts

  2. b)  the display of visual material which is offensive

  3. c)  negative remarks, jokes, comments, innuendos or taunts

  4. d)  leering or other suggestive or obscene gestures

  5. e)  condescending or patronizing behaviour which undermines self-esteem, diminishes performance and/or adversely affect working conditions

  6. f)  practical jokes which humiliate or endanger a persons safety or negatively affect performance

  7. g)  any form of hazing which is a form of conduct that exhibits a potentially humiliating, degrading, abusive, or dangerous activity expected of a junior-ranking individual by a more senior individual, which does not contribute to either individuals positive development, but is required to be accepted as part of a team or group, regardless of the junior-ranking individuals willingness to participate. This includes, but is not limited to, any activity, no matter how traditional or seemingly benign, that sets apart or alienates any teammate or group member based on class, number of years on the team or with the group, or ability.

  8. h)  unwanted physical contact including, but not limited to, touching, petting, pinching or kissing

  1. i)  physical or sexual assault

  2. j)  behaviours such as those described above that are not directed towards a specific individual or group but have the same effect of creating a negative or hostile environment.

  3. k)  retaliation or threats of retaliation against an individual who reports harassment to ESWIM or Swim Ontario.

3. Refrain from any behaviour that constitutes sexual harassment, where sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual comments and sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, or conduct of a sexual nature. This includes but is not limited to:

  1. a)  sexist jokes;

  2. b)  display of sexually offensive material;

  3. c)  sexually degrading words used to describe a person;

  4. d)  inquiries or comments about a persons sex life;

  5. e)  unwelcome sexual flirtations, advances, propositions, requests or invitations;

  6. f)  persistent unwanted contact; and

  7. g)  sexual assault.

    4. Abstain from the non-medical use of drugs or the use of performance-enhancing drugs or methods. ESWIM and Swim Ontario adheres to the Canadian Anti-Doping Program and will respect any penalty enacted pursuant to a breach of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program as per Swim Canada. No vaping nor alcohol consumption is permitted.

      5. Refrain from associating with any person for the purpose of coaching, training, competition, instruction, administration, management, athletic development or supervision of the sport of competitive swimming, who has incurred a sanction involving a period of ineligibility imposed pursuant to the Canadian Anti-Doping Program and/or the World Anti-Doping Code and recognized by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES). Provided the foregoing is properly established pursuant to the Etobicoke Swim Club Discipline Policy, such association on the part of the Member shall be considered a breach of the Etobicoke Swim Clubs Code of Conduct and Ethics and appropriate disciplinary sanction may be appli

      5. Refrain from associating with any person for the purpose of coaching, training, competition, instruction, administration, management, athletic development or supervision of the sport of competitive swimming, who has incurred a sanction involving a period of ineligibility imposed pursuant to the Canadian Anti-Doping Program and/or the World Anti-Doping Code and recognized by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES). Provided the foregoing is properly established pursuant to the Etobicoke Swim Club Discipline Policy, such association on the part of the Member shall be considered a breach of the Etobicoke Swim Clubs Code of Conduct and Ethics and appropriate disciplinary sanction may be applied.

      6. Refrain from the use of power or authority in an attempt to coerce another person to engage in inappropriate activities.

      7. Respect the property of others and not willfully cause damage.

      8. Members must adhere to the ESWIM Social Media Policy

      9. Promote swimming in the most constructive and positive manner possible.

      10. Adhere to all federal, provincial, municipal and host country laws.

      11. Comply at all times with the Bylaws, policies, procedures, rules and regulations of ESWIM and Swim Ontario, as adopted and amended from time to time.

        12. In addition, Athletes must:

        1. a)  report any medical problems in a timely fashion, where such problems may limit the athletes ability to travel, train or compete

        2. b)  participate and appear on time, well-nourished and prepared to participate to ones best abilities in all competitions, practices, training sessions, events, activities or projects

        3. c)  properly represent oneself and not attempt to enter a competition for which one is not eligible, by reason of age, classification or other reason

        4. d)  adhere to ESWIMs rules and regulations regarding travel, clothing, equipment and daily training environment

        5. e)  at all times, present oneself in a positive manner to all other athletes, members and coaches

        6. f)  show respect for, co-operate with, and take direction from coaches, meet management, pool management, team staff, and people in authority positions, as required

        7. g)  encourage other athletes to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence

        8. h)  when travelling, adhere to ESWIMs rules and regulations regarding team-travel, room maintenance, related charges, and room occupancy

        9. i)  while travelling swimmers hotel doors must be propped fully open any time a visiting member of the team or any permitted outside visitor is in the room

        10. j)  respect and show appreciation to all competitors, coaches, officials and other volunteers who give their time to the sport

        In addition for Parents/Legal Guardians and Spectators and Directors must:

        1. a)  encourage athletes to play by the rules and resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence

        2. b)  never ridicule a participant for a poor performance or practice; provide positive comments that motivate and encourage participants' continued efforts

        3. c)  respect the decisions and judgments of officials and encourage athletes to do the same;

        4. d)  not question a referee or officials judgment or honesty

        5. e)  respect and show appreciation to all competitors and to the coaches, officials, referees and other volunteers who gie their time to the sport; and,

        6. f)  keep off of the training and competition area and not interfere with training, training camps, competition events and protocols.

        Infractions of the Code of Conduct will result in the pursuit of disciplinary actions per the Clubs policies and by-laws. Officials are governed by the Swim Ontario Officials Code of Conduct.
